many amphibians are threatened with extinction.

BUFO AND THE 'stove, or the impact of roads on
spring migration of amphibians and actions
Protection: This is the title of the interesting
meeting and debate, organized by friends of toads
Polcenigo in collaboration with the 'Association
Cordenonese Nature, WWF Chamber of Pordenone and the Friuli
Section LAC (League' s
abolition of the Hunt) on Saturday afternoon and held in Pordenone
room Meeting of 'ex Convento di San Francesco,
very crowded for the occasion. The conference, which took
actors as speakers Dr. Nicola Bressi
conservation biologist and zoologist,
Conservative Management of the Museum of Natural History
of Trieste, Prof. Dr. Mario Cosmo and For. Fabio
Bidese group Friends of the toads Polcenigo.
Dr. Bressi, has primarily focused its attention on the current
danger of extinction for many species of amphibians
(voracious insect and valuable piece of
food chain, their presence ensures, for example
survival of many species of birds) and then illustrate with a rich
series of images
amphibians in our region with particular reference to the area of \u200b\u200b
Polcenigo, including, in addition to
common toad (Bufo bufo-), the emerald green and yellow-bellied. Even
different frogs inhabit the western Friuli between
which for brevity we mention the frog and the Dalmatian
Lataste of which are considered "species of Community interest
" and therefore protected by the Habitats Directive EEC
. There are also several species of salamanders and newts
, the latter infallible
enemies of the tiger mosquito.
Dr. Bressi, subsequently, he indicated which can be
solutions to mitigate the consequences
amphibians due to habitat fragmentation, as occurs in Polcenigo
precisely where the amphibians of the forest, where
overwinter, must reach the water to breed,
in spring, with the foothills on the road impassable
cross.
The best solution, said Dr. Bressi,
is certainly the bottom of the viaduct, or
temporary closure of roads (the only viable way
secondary and alternative), but also that of the tunnel barriers is a good solution
practiced in several European countries
.
Dr. Fabio Bidese and Prof. Mario Cosmo,
latter since 1996 has put in place initiatives to pro
Polcenigo amphibians, have retraced the steps to protect
made in recent years by a group of volunteers, the Friends of
toads, including the creation of an information brochure
in collaboration with the Province of Pordenone.
In particular, attention has focused
task that is performed in Polcenigo,
along the upstream side of the road above the town where the Holy
, every January in the period immediately preceding the
migration, are prepared
temporary barriers. Subsequently, in February and March, when the migration begins
, volunteers armed with flashlight, rubber gloves
, reflective vests and bucket every night collect
amphibians behind the barrier to free
downstream of the road.
Dr. Bressi has shown that this method of saving
can be used only temporarily
waiting for a different solution, as the tunnel barriers
that all the associations in unison
hope. In this sense, the Province of Pordenone,
solicited volunteers will hopefully take into account the implementation of the necessary
underpasses,
perhaps as early as 2010, since it is the international year of biodiversity
. "
But what is the reason for a lot of work on amphibians? The
Dr. Bressi replied that conserve biodiversity
means to protect the very survival of human species
, which is a piece of the entire ecosystem. Some
volunteers in the audience loved: like any other animal
also the toad has an intrinsic value, the value
of their existence.
